Verbal Abuse Prevention Week
Tip Sheet
Here are a few ways in which your parent organization and/or school can raise awareness about verbal abuse prevention.
- Send a news release in September announcing that your school parent group is taking part in a Canada Wide Verbal Abuse Prevention Week October 1-6, 2007.
- Incorporate verbal abuse prevention into existing school activities (i.e. Respect Week, Fair Play, Second Step, Bullying Programs) and display PEI's posters and brochures.
- Hold a school assembly and invite a speaker to talk about verbal abuse and how it can lead to other forms of abuse and its impact violence upon the home, school and community. Extend the invitation to parents.
- Conduct a "March of Peace" by walking from one school to a neighboring school with students delivering letters containing peaceful messages for other students to promote verbal abuse prevention and violence in schools.
- Set up a bulletin board in your school which displays posters and poems written by students depicting how verbal abuse affects them.
- Hold classroom discussions, parent meeting discussions on how verbal abuse affects the home, the school and the community's environment.
- Seek a funding source to purchase "Walk For Talk" T-shirt(s) and use in any of the following ways or come up with your own idea:
- School principal wear T-shirt during Verbal Abuse Prevention Week.
- Classroom teachers wear T-shirt and hold classroom discussions on verbal abuse.
- Use the T-Shirt as a prize for Art work.
- Parents buy T-shirts and organize "Walk For Talk" in your community.
- Compile a one page newsletter which has a collection of verbal abuse prevention tips for parents, children and youth and other members of our communities and make it available to parents and post it on community bulletin boards.
- Organize a "Walk For Talk" in your community - PEI is challenging each province to walk 450 km. PEI has committed to walking 4000 km. If all provinces participate we will collectively have walked the distance equivalent to walking across Canada, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Let's do it!
Call 1-902-838-4900 to report total distance walked in your province.
